These are the headlines you Need 2 Know. * **Trump Re-election:** President Trump officially kicked off his reelection campaign with a freewheeling rally in Orlando in front of thousands of adoring supporters. The president did not announce any new policies or an agenda for his second term. Instead, he denounced the news media, rallied against the Russia investigation and Hillary Clinton, and unveiled his new slogan for 2020: “Keep America Great.” Trump is lagging in many polls but enters the race with the benefit of a huge war chest -- some $80 million -- and the power of incumbency on his side. Shanahan has been leading the Dept. of Defense on a temporary basis since Jim Mattis abruptly resigned. There are reports Shanahan’s background check was being held up due to allegations of domestic violence in his family’s past. Nearly a decade ago, Shanahan’s then-wife accused him of punching her, though police at the time arrested her for assaulting him. In a separate incident a year later, Shanahan defended his teenage son after he beat his mother with a baseball bat. Esper graduated from the U.S. Military Academy the same years as Mike Pompeo, and served on active duty for more than 10 years. Trump did not say whether Esper will be nominated for the permanent job. Meanwhile, there are reports this week that two more Americans were found dead in their hotel rooms at separate Dominican Republic resorts, bringing the number of Americans who have died in the country to at least nine in the last 12 months. The parent company of British Airways signed a letter of intent to buy 200 of the planes, worth about $24 billion at market prices (though it likely got a steep discount). The 737 Max has been grounded since March as engineers work to fix a software issue that is thought to be behind those two accidents. Three years after an online poll in the U.K. resulted in that unfortunate name being crowned the winning name of the research vessel, Boaty has made its first major discovery. The unmanned submarine gathered deep-sea evidence that has led to a breakthrough in how climate scientists understand how polar winds are warming the oceans. The research was published in the scientific journal PNAS, which gave Boaty credit. [Gizmodo](https://earther.gizmodo.com/boaty-mcboatface-just-helped-solve-a-deep-sea-mystery-1835613992). Al Sharpton to lead pro-DEI march through Wall Street
The Rev. Al Sharpton is set to lead a protest march on Wall Street to urge corporate America to resist the Trump administration’s campaign to roll back diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. The New York civil rights leader will join clergy, labor and community leaders Thursday in a demonstration through Manhattan’s Financial District that’s timed with the anniversary of the Civil Rights-era March on Washington in 1963. Sharpton called DEI the “civil rights fight of our generation." He and other Black leaders have called for boycotting American retailers that scaled backed policies and programs aimed at bolstering diversity and reducing discrimination in their ranks.
A US tariff exemption for small orders ends Friday. It’s a big deal.
Low-value imports are losing their duty-free status in the U.S. this week as part of President Donald Trump's agenda for making the nation less dependent on foreign goods. A widely used customs exemption for international shipments worth $800 or less is set to end starting on Friday. Trump already ended the “de minimis” rule for inexpensive items sent from China and Hong Kong, but having to pay import taxes on small parcels from everywhere else likely will be a big change for some small businesses and online shoppers. Purchases that previously entered the U.S. without needing to clear customs will be subject to the origin country’s tariff rate, which can range from 10% to 50%.
Southwest Airlines’ new policy will affect plus-size travelers. Here’s how
Southwest Airlines will soon require plus-size travelers to pay for an extra seat in advance if they can't fit within the armrests of one seat. This change is part of several updates the airline is making. The new rule starts on Jan. 27, the same day Southwest begins assigning seats. Currently, plus-size passengers can pay for an extra seat in advance and later get a refund, or request a free extra seat at the airport. Under the new policy, refunds are still possible but not guaranteed. Southwest said in a statement it is updating policies to prepare for assigned seating next year.
