*By Brittany Terrell* In what many critics are calling a Golden Age of new television, viewers are getting a steady dose of nostalgia across broadcast, cable, and streaming. Joining the 1990s small-screen stars of "Will and Grace" on NBC, and ABC's "Roseanne," you can now add "The Karate Kid," Daniel LaRusso, and his high-school nemesis, Johnny Lawrence. The streaming platform YouTube Red launched Wednesday the new series "Cobra Kai," which picks up 34 years after the 1984 film classic "The Karate Kid" ended. "We fell in love with these teenage characters and part of the show that's fun is seeing these characters grow up," said Jon Hurwitz, a co-creator of "Cobra Kai." The new 10-episode series brings back the original movie's stars, Ralph Macchio as Daniel, now a successful Encino, Calif., car salesman, and William Zabka as Johnny, a deadbeat with a drinking problem. For those new to "The Karate Kid" story, or who need a refresher after so many years, the show offers plenty of backstory woven in to the new plot. "We have flashbacks on the show," said Hurwitz in an interview Wednesday on Cheddar. "You get to see even new footage that we filmed where you see these characters even before the events of 'The Karate Kid.'" The new series puts a modern spin on themes from the classic film. "The fun thing is seeing Johnny today looking at kids today, the bullies and the people who are being bullied, and he sees these cyber bullies today hiding behind their anonymous avatars and sending mean messages," said Hayden Scholossberg, another co-creator of the show. "And he looks at them like a bunch of weak wusses."
