She noted that engagement with consumers is critical, and brands that are looking to promote online have to actually be online themselves. "You can tell when a business, a brand, or a celebrity is a part of their own audience and connecting with their community versus when they're just trying things that they think are trendy and cool or at the moment," she said.
Tesla reported a surprise increase in sales in the third quarter as the electric car maker likely benefited from a rush by consumers to take advantage of a $7,500 credit before it expired on Sept. 30.
