Sound may not be the first thing you notice when you go to the movies, but when it’s done right, it’s hard to ignore.
Julian Slater earned his first Oscar nominations for the sound editing and mixing on “Baby Driver,” and some say he could be the spoiler.
“We seem to have hit upon something that non-industry people picked up on,” he told Cheddar on Friday. “I speak to people who saw and listened to the movie and kind of said, ‘Wow, I don’t normally notice sound, and I noticed the sound in ‘Baby Driver.’”
The sound engineer noted that the film’s success did help draw attention to his work. He also acknowledges that a little bit of luck went into getting the nod.
“Baby Driver” earned three Oscar nominations for film editing, sound editing, and sound mixing.
The 90th Academy Awards air Sunday at 8 pm ET on ABC.
