Sound may not be the first thing you notice when you go to the movies, but when it’s done right, it’s hard to ignore. Julian Slater earned his first Oscar nominations for the sound editing and mixing on “Baby Driver,” and some say he could be the spoiler. “We seem to have hit upon something that non-industry people picked up on,” he told Cheddar on Friday. “I speak to people who saw and listened to the movie and kind of said, ‘Wow, I don’t normally notice sound, and I noticed the sound in ‘Baby Driver.’” The sound engineer noted that the film’s success did help draw attention to his work. He also acknowledges that a little bit of luck went into getting the nod. “Baby Driver” earned three Oscar nominations for film editing, sound editing, and sound mixing. The 90th Academy Awards air Sunday at 8 pm ET on ABC. For full interview, [click here](https://cheddar.com/videos/oscar-nominated-sound-editor-julian-slater-on-a-films-sonic-journey).

Despite Black Participation in Stock Market Lagging, Investment Gap Might Improve
According to the Federal Reserve, the investment gap between Black and white Americans has remained substantial, with only 34 percent of Black households joining in on the historic rise in the markets. Stacey Tisdale, the first Black woman to have reported from the NYSE and the CEO and president of Mind Money Media Inc., said that the data might not be as disheartening as it seems. "I think that number is very deceiving. That Federal Reserve study is actually from 2019, and it's very important that we all look beneath that number and look beneath the surface because there is nothing short of an investing revolution going on in the Black community," Tisdale said.
