Facebook said it will resume its process of reviewing third-party apps using new, tighter controls after the Cambridge Analytica scandal revealed holes in the social network's data privacy protocols.
“We’re going to be taking a higher level of expectation when we look at your applications,” said Ime Archibong, Facebook’s vice president of product partnerships, in his keynote speech Wednesday at Facebook’s annual developers' conference.
Facebook also announced that it will restrict the amount of data that apps have access to and enable users to see exactly what data is being used by third-party apps, or more easily delete apps they no longer use.
Facebook halted its review of all outside apps after it was revealed that users' data had been mishandled by a third-party app and shared with the research firm Cambridge Analytica.
The decision to suspend reviews ー and the changes ー frustrated some developers, who said their businesses was disrupted. But Archibong told Cheddar's Alex Heath in an interview Wednesday that most developers understand in “the long run that’s the right thing to do.”
“Facebook’s making these changes not because we’re trying to be hard or add more friction or be disruptive to the building process but truly to ensure that people trust the products that we’re building,” Archibong said.

Tire manufacturer Michelin is partnering with the popular video game "The Sims FreePlay" in order to meet teens where they are to promote driving safety. Michelin North America Chairman and President Alexis Garcin joined Cheddar News to discuss how the #GoldenGauge program integrates with the game. After reporting record deliveries in Q4, expectations are high for Tesla's Q4 earnings call. Garrett Nelson, senior analyst and VP of equity research at CFRA, joined Cheddar News to discuss predictions about the report and what he sees as the emphasis on the EV maker's future. "We think the focal point of the release is really going to be on their guidance for 2022, the timing of the ramp-up of their new factories in Texas and Germany in the face of these chip shortages and supply chain issues, and also next steps in its long-term growth plans," he noted.
Coming off of a fourth-quarter delivering just over 300,000 cars, Tesla is expected to report tremendous earnings after the bell on Wednesday. Al Root, a senior writer for Barron’s, spoke with Cheddar’s Baker Machado about the anticipated earnings report and speculated about what Elon Musk will discuss during the call with investors, including a Cybertruck update, new factories, a possible new vehicle, and/or new larger form batteries. "There's a menu of things he could talk about, and any combination of those would be good," said Root.
The American Federation Teachers Union has announced its latest partnership with NewsGuard in efforts to help educators play a greater role in deciphering facts from fiction that students see online. They say the goal is to help students build critical-thinking skills while also teaching them the importance of media literacy.
