COVID-19: LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: The U.S. surpassed 140,000 COVID-19 deaths this weekend as many states across the South and in the West are finding an uptick in cases. In California, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said the city is "on the brink" of a new stay-at-home order. Meanwhile, a new study from South Korea found that kids 10 and over may spread the virus just as much as adults. Various studies have come up with different results, with several suggesting kids are not as much of a threat as adults, but the vast number of people involved in this one has caught the attention of the scientific community. REMEMBERING JOHN LEWIS: Civil rights leader Rep. John Lewis passed away Friday at the age of 80 due to complications from stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Born as a son of sharecroppers, Lewis became a forceful presence in the peaceful movement for equality as a member of the Freedom Riders and one of the leaders of the 1963 March on Washington. President Trump ordered federal flags to fly at half-staff on Saturday in honor of the 17-term congressman, while other government leaders issued their own orders that will be in effect longer. AJC
TRUMP INTERVIEW: What didn't President Trump and Fox News host Chris Wallace talk about during a wide-ranging interview on Sunday? Wallace fact-checked the president on several claims about his administration's coronavirus response, Biden's plans for police reform, and lagging poll numbers, and chuckled as the president boasted about acing the "very hard" cognitive test he took at Walter Reed. PORTLAND PROTESTS: A large protest in Portland, Ore. devolved into violence this weekend as rioters burned down a police union headquarters. Anger has grown in the city, which is more often known for keeping it weird, after the federal government sent in unidentified agents to tamp down peaceful protests. Mayor Ted Wheeler said he believes the fed's show of force in the liberal haven is "a last gasp effort" to pander to Trump's voter base as his poll numbers drag. NPR
JOBLESS AID BOOST ENDING: This will be the last week the feds add an additional $600 to weekly unemployment benefits that jobless Americans have been relying on since the pandemic shuttered businesses across the country. It was part of a $2 trillion aid package passed by Congress in March and has been a lifeline for workers as major industries struggle to find ways to stabilize and reopen. Congress is currently working on another economic stimulus package, but Republicans have signaled opposition to extending the extra funds as they currently stand. CNN
STONE DROPS RACIAL SLUR: Fresh off of a mind-boggling presidential commutation, Trump ally Roger Stone called into a radio talk show Saturday and dropped a racial slur live on air. KFI-AM's Morris O'Kelly, who is Black, continued on with the interview despite the shocking comment because he said it was important that all the questions that needed to be asked of Stone were asked. #WEWANTTOPLAY: As NFL rookies begin reporting for training camp today, a number of star players say they're not convinced the league's COVID-19 protocols are up to snuff. Many, including the Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes, Seahawks' Russell Wilson, Texans' J.J. Watt, tweeted that there are no clear plans to ensure player health. Meanwhile, 80-year-old golf legend Jack Nicklaus revealed this weekend that he and his wife both contracted the coronavirus near the beginning of the U.S. outbreak but recovered after a month-long quarantine. NETFLIX'S BIG BET: Netflix plans to spend a staggering $200 million on its next original film, the company's most expensive original production ever and one that rivals that of a big studio franchise film. The Gray Man, a James Bond-esque spy thriller, will star Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. The Russo Brothers, who directed Avengers: Endgame, are on board to helm the flick. DEADLINE
SPOTTED: Britain's Princess Beatrice, granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II and daughter of embattled royal Prince Andrew, got married to property developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi this weekend in a small and exquisite "Secret Garden"-themed ceremony. SEE PICS
LEFTOVERS: AS IF! Classic teen flick Clueless turned 25 this weekend and got an outpouring of love on social media. The movie launched stars like Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, and the late Brittany Murphy into new levels of fame. W Magazine celebrated by revisiting a video it made featuring actors Adam Driver, Andrew Garfield, Alden Ehrenreich and Lucas Hedges (who wasn't even born at the time of the film's release) reciting one of the movie's famous monologues.
