Gretchen Carlson returns to TV next week as the host of a new series on Lifetime about the real-life stories of women who have the courage to persevere in the face of adversity.
Carlson, who won the 1988 Miss America contest, became a television journalist and well-known Fox News host, but left that network in 2016 as she filed a sexual harassment suit against Fox News's then chairman, Roger Ailes.
She said an arbitration settlement of her suit prevents her from speaking publicly about her experience at Fox and the allegations against Ailes, who died in 2017. So instead, Carlson has decided to embrace her role in the #MeToo movement by amplifying the voices of other women who don't have the same platform she has.
"Women saw that in my story that not only did I receive an apology, but there were consequences and that empowered so many other women to know that their voice mattered," she said.
The Lifetime program, "Justice for Women with Gretchen Carlson," will have its debut on June 18 and feature two, hour-long series about the struggles of modern women battling sexism, discrimination, and abuse.
The first hour will be devoted to a new series, "Women on Patrol," which follows female police officers in the line of duty. Carlson narrates the program at 9 p.m. ET. The second hour will include the fourth season of "Escaping Polygamy," which chronicles the lives of three sisters that escaped a Salt Lake City polygamist group.
"It just seems to align perfectly about what I've been speaking about over the last two years about encouraging women to stand up and speak up and have a voice in any way that they feel like they're being put down," Carlson said about her role in the two series.
