Personal finance writer Susan Johnston Taylor joins Your Cheddar to talk about the different trends in millennial's charitable giving. She says many young adults are now interested in social causes such as civil rights, climate change, and employment. Many recently donated to hurricane relief over the past few months. Social media also does a lot to bring awareness to social causes, but Taylor says you have to be careful with how you use it. Just liking or sharing a post isn't necessarily helping that cause. Organizations ultimately need money and volunteers. An alternative way millennials are getting involved in charities is through joining associate boards. It requires a smaller commitment than an actual board, but you still feel more involved than just volunteering a few hours a month. Plus, what are the top mistakes you're making when giving back to charity? Taylor says they include giving impulsively, giving with strings attached, and donating unusable goods.
