"The Pirates of Somalia" Director Bryan Buckley on Fighting Stereotypes
"The Pirates of Somalia" stars Evan Peters as rookie journalist Jay Bahadur, who has an inspiring chance encounter with his idol, played Al Pacino. Because of it, he uproots his life and moves to Somalia, looking for the story of a lifetime. Director Bryan Buckley sits down with Alyssa Julya Smith in Los Angles talk about the film, which is set to hit theaters on December 8th.
Buckley touches on the media portrayal of Somalia as a dangerous country, which he says could not be further from the truth. He says Somali people actually have a great sense of humor, and that he hired Somali refugees to play huge roles in the film. "The Pirates of Somalia" shot in South Africa for the most part, where many of the the refugees who participated in the movie were living.
Finally, Buckley talks about how important stories like this one are to tell, especially as major motion pictures. He discusses the fact that documentaries have a smaller audience, so being able to tell a story and bring awareness is a huge responsibility.
