The market pioneered by companies like Blue Apron, Birch Box, and Stitch Fix offers an opportunity to better understand consumer behavior through data. Brand Innovators Chief Marketing Officer Ted Rubin explains why Target, Walmart, and JC Penney are entering this space. "These guys know this business in many ways better than the box services," says Rubin. "Their profitability has been limited." Only 15% of U.S. digital buyers had subscribed to a box-type service in 2017, according to McKinsey & Company.
