For American women, the coronavirus pandemic has been devastating when it comes to employment. With more than three million women dropping out of the workforce and many of them also mothers, shapewear marketplace company Shapermint is looking to fill a new role: chief mom officer.
"Shapermint wants to address these issues and bring to light the disparities and reshape the modern workplace. Being a mom is one of the most important jobs of all and we want to celebrate this and focus our attention on the subject to celebrate Mother's Day this year," Chief Brand Officer Siobhán Lonergan told Cheddar.
Lonergan said Shapermint has a responsibility to pay it forward to women since 80 percent of its customer base is made up of "mothers, and partners, grandmothers, sisters, and caregivers" who, in addition to maintaining households, have taken on many additional roles at home like that of teacher and coach.
However, there are some qualifications the lucky applicant will need to satisfy before being considered for the "salaried, flexible, remote working position." Among them, the woman should be a mover and shaker on social media and be able to produce original content.
"One of the job's opportunities is part adviser, part ambassador, part content creator, and when we talk about being an adviser, we want to integrate them within our product development teams," Lonergan said.
"Part of the qualifications for this role is beyond being a mom and have mom figure experience. We want to make sure that they are active on social, that they have excellent communication skills, that they have an ability to generate and create organic content, and have knowledge of the industry."
The person selected for the role will also have a hand in the designs that come to market for Shapermint as the company looks to have its chief mom officer provide insights to its product development team.
Shapewear has continued trending upward amid the pandemic. In the fourth quarter of 2020, fashion search engine Lyst reported a 22 percent increase in shapewear searches and just this month, Kim Kardashian's shapewear company Skims was valued at $1.6 billion.
Lonergan said though people are getting out of the house due to beefed up vaccine efforts, she expects the positive trend to continue in the industry.
"Shapermint is a marketplace that sells not only shapewear but leggings, bras, undies, and more," she noted. "These products are everyday essentials whether you are at home or not because they provide you comfort and support in whatever outfits you choose to wear, whether that is being dressed down or dressed up."

Low-value imports are losing their duty-free status in the U.S. this week as part of President Donald Trump's agenda for making the nation less dependent on foreign goods. A widely used customs exemption for international shipments worth $800 or less is set to end starting on Friday. Southwest Airlines will soon require plus-size travelers to pay for an extra seat in advance if they can't fit within the armrests of one seat. This change is part of several updates the airline is making. The new rule starts on Jan. 27, the same day Southwest begins assigning seats. Currently, plus-size passengers can pay for an extra seat in advance and later get a refund, or request a free extra seat at the airport. Under the new policy, refunds are still possible but not guaranteed. Southwest said in a statement it is updating policies to prepare for assigned seating next year.
